Amazing that this album turns 10 years old next year.

Brings back so many memories!

Every now and again, I stop and think back to when I first hear a song, and the memories which are associated with it.

A few weeks ago I remembered the first time I heard Opiate...

...In the summer of '92. I felt goddamned old when I realized just how long ago that was.

Wow, Opiate. I remember hearing that for the first time on a school band trip to Orlando around '97 or '98. That long Maynard scream was unforgettable.

I was only 9 in 1992, so that wouldn't have been appropriate for me ;) But I do remember watching MTV around '94 or so and seeing the claymation video for Prison Sex. But it wasn't until Christmas '97 when I got AEnima for a stocking stuffer. Danny Carey changed the way I play drums ever since.

I was 17 in '92. I first heard in at a goth/industrial club. And as someone coming from a metal approach to music appreciation, Opiate and NIN's Broken kind of changed everything for me. Led me directly down the rabbit hole with Ministry, Revolting Cocks, Skinny Puppy and the rest.

I never looked back, by '94 I had completely dove into the scene and I never really resurfaced.

Danny Carey is the greatest drummer ever. Anyone who says otherwise (with a couple of allowable arguments for some rather obscure folks, and a lot of jazz drummers I've never heard of)... they just haven't listened hard enough.

Carey really is something. Good quality videos of him drumming are very rare. I've read in interviews that he doesn't do drum clinics because it's like a monkey show.

I used to sell drums at Guitar Center and we had this DVD on rotation featuring the man himself. As far as I know, this is the best look at him doing his work out there:

This song specifically got me into APC at a time when I wasn't a big fan of Tool (who were arguably more popular despite having the same front-man), which ended up getting me into Tool. This is a good album, and this song is easily my favorite on it, but, IMHO, The Thirteenth step was superior. Whether or not you agree with my personal ranking of the two, they are both awesome albums.

In case any of you didn't know (because I didn't until a couple weeks ago), The Nurse Who Loved Me is a cover of a song by the band "Failure". I love APC's version of that song, but ended up preferring the original.
